Placing a photo, pattern, or grunge texture inside typography is one of the most popular text effects in graphic design. In Adobe Illustrator, this is achieved using a Clipping Mask.

What is a Text Clipping Mask in Illustrator?
A clipping mask is an object whose shape masks other artwork so that only areas that lie within the shape are visible. When you use live text as a mask, any photo, illustration, or background texture placed behind it is clipped to the contours of your letters.
The biggest advantage of doing this in Adobe Illustrator (versus Photoshop) is that the text remains a live, vector-based type object. You can change the font, retype words, or adjust tracking even after the mask is applied.
Step-by-Step: How to Mask an Image into Text
Step 1: Type Your Text
Select the Type Tool (T) from the toolbar and click on your artboard. Type your desired word. For the best visual impact, use a heavy, bold, or black font weight (such as Impact, Montserrat ExtraBold, or Futura Bold) so the texture inside the letters is clearly visible.
Step 2: Place Your Image or Texture
Go to File > Place, browse your computer for the photo or texture you want to use, and click onto your artboard. Scale the image using the Selection Tool (V) while holding Shift to maintain its aspect ratio.
Step 3: Arrange the Layer Stacking Order (Crucial)
In Adobe Illustrator, the masking object (your text) must always be on top of the artwork you want to mask.

- Right-click and go to Arrange > Bring to Front (Shortcut:

Need to reposition the image or change the text? You do not have to undo your work:
- To move the image inside the text: Double-click on the masked object with the Selection Tool (V) to enter Isolation Mode. You can now drag, rotate, or scale the background image independently. Click the gray arrow at the top-left of the canvas to exit Isolation Mode.
- To edit the text: Select the Type Tool (T), click inside the letters, and type new characters or change the typeface.

Why is my Clipping Mask option grayed out or not working?
This usually happens for two reasons:
1. Your text is sitting behind the image instead of in front. Always bring text to the front.
2. You have multiple separate text objects selected without grouping or converting them into a compound path.
Can I add a stroke or drop shadow to a text clipping mask?
Yes. Select the clipped group with the Selection Tool, open the Appearance Panel (Window > Appearance), and add a new Stroke or Fill. Alternatively, you can apply effects via Effect > Stylize > Drop Shadow.
